TWENTY-FOUR
âIRONSIDEâ
LUCAS
Waiting on Mira to finish up her day, Iâm sitting on the front wraparound porch in a rocking chair, shooting the shit with Avalanche. Goddamn, this would be the life. My eyes canât take in all the beauty directly in front of me. I could do without all the comings and goings to the main house butâfuckânot my circus, not my monkeys or clowns, as they say.
Canât count how many times Shadow has been in and out. Each time she had a sarcastic or rude comment directed at me.
âWhat, Ironside, donât you got nothinâ to do?â
âJust like a government employee, always sitting down on their ass while on the clock. Wait, I guess even ex-government employee âcause you donât have a job anymore lazy fuck.â
âFuck, man, move around a bit before your muscles atrophy.â
âThank God Panther isnât a useless son of a bitch like you, Lucas.â
Thatâs just to name a few of her engaging moments. Now, on the other hand some of the other Devilâs Handmaidens sisters were quite cordial. Squirt was a riot and it was twice as hard âcause she looked so much like Tink. Taz was just colorful, to say the least. Glory sat with me for a bit and just visited like a human being. Heartbreaker, Peanut, and Duchess all at one time or another thanked me for saving their sister Vixen from Juice. Even the three prospects besides Squirt, Dani, Dotty, and Kitty were engaging. The only one with attitude was Shadow. Great, here she comes again with a shit-eating smirk on her face.
âIronside, hey, you got a minute? Could use some help.â
I look at her cautiously because you never know what sheâs going to toss at you, literally and figuratively. I give her an abrupt nod but donât move. She stops, crossing her arms under her chest, and suddenly I feel like this is some type of test. Sheâs almost posing with a hip thrown out while her arms are pressing her tits up and out. And from what I remember, this isnât Shadowâs MO. So what the fuck is going on with her now?
âWhat are you up to, little skull aniiâ? Never trust this one, Ironside, sheâs trouble coming and going. Donât make me put a call out to Panther again. Ainât you supposed to be getting ready to take off tomorrow for Mesquite? Quit bothering the man with your silly games, you psycho.â
I watch the interaction between the two of them and it hits me. They quarrel like siblings. And being their connection is Panther, who has importance in both of their lives, this is how they deal with each other.
âBig Bird, go find Snuffy to play with because no one here has the time or effort to amuse your childish ass. Now go, maybe walk out to the bullâs pasture, maybe Snuffy is out there. Before you go grab a red shirt, just sayinâ.â
And with that she cracks herself up. She smiles down at me then enters the house again. I look at the closed door then at Avalanche with big eyes.
